Melvin Shelton Woodard, 82, died Feb. 19, 1997, in a Portsmouth hospital.
He was the widower of Jennie Lee Woodard and a member of Jackson Memorial Baptist Church. He and his brother were co-owners of Portsmouth Body & Motor Service from 1944 to 1976. He was a member of America Fellowship Masonic Lodge (NU)148, a past patron of Fellowship O.E.S. (NU)140 and member of the Woodman of the World. He was a native of the West Norfolk Section of Portsmouth.
Survivors include a daughter, Ann W. Campbell of Athens, Tenn.; a sister, Gertie Sullivan of Chesapeake; two brothers, E.J. Woodard of Portsmouth, John Lewis Woodard Jr. of Orlando, Fla.; three grandchildren, Dorothy Lee Carr of Chesapeake, the Rev. Thomas S. Campbell of Knoxville, Tenn., William H. Campbell of Washington, D.C.; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Jackson Memorial Baptist Church by Dr. Albert A. Peverall Jr. Burial with Masonic rites will be in Olive Branch Cemetery. There will be an Eastern Star service conducted in Loving Funeral Home Churchland Chapel at 7 p.m. today with visitation to follow until 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Jackson Memorial Baptist Church, 4316 Bruce Road, Chesapeake, Va., 23321.
