Charles Milford Mathis, 73, of the 2700 block of S. Nansemond Drive, died March 10, 1997.
A native of Bleckley County, Ga., he was the son of the late Arnie Calhoun and Ruby Cheek Mathis. Mr. Mathis had retired from Western Branch Diesel as purchasing manager. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, serving in the Pacific and was a member of the VFW. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Juanita Ruth Mathis; six sons, Charles Mathis Jr. of Norfolk, Butch Twiford of Chesapeake, Steve Twiford of Alabama, Ricky Twiford of Kentucky, Larry Twiford of Portsmouth, David Mathis of Suffolk; a sister, Alma Bryant of Macon, Ga.; three brothers, J.C. Mathis, Melvin Mathis, Bobby Mathis, all of Cochran, Ga.; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the graveside in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens by Dr. Albert A. Peverall Jr. The family will receive friends in the Baker-Foster Funeral Home, Bennett's Creek Chapel, from 7 to 9 p.m. today.
