THAT WAS THEN

ILLUSTRATION: Granby Street Nocturne

Credit: Photo by William S. McIntosh

William S. McIntosh, Norfolk's well-known portrait photographer,

recorded this evocative rain-swept night scene of Granby Street

looking southward just above Freemason Street late one evening in

September 1950. Apparently only one spectator (front right) was

poetical minded enough to brave the drizzle to enjoy the

neon-lighted brilliance. All gone now, but how vividly those

blazing lights, including those of Loew's and the Norva theaters,

Grant's and Shulman's on the left, and Hofheimer's on the right,

recall the time when lower Granby Street was Norfolk's main

commercial and amusement artery.
