ALBERT L. OAKLEY

Albert Leslie Oakley, 85, of the 2300 block of Gilmerton Road passed away Tuesday March 25, 1997, after a lengthy illness to be with his Lord.

He was a native of Portsmouth and retired former president of Oakley Plumbing and Heating Ltd. He was associated with Berean Chapel since its inception. He was a former member of many hunt clubs and an avid hunter.

He was predeceased by his father, Harry L. Oakley and mother, Mary McPherson Oakley; also four brothers, Charles, Cecil, Harry and Clarence Oakley; and two sisters, Violet and Myrtle Suter. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather. He was a very understanding and caring person who often shared his home with many people, several familes included, who in turn enriched his life with many fond memories.

Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, Etta Colwell Oakley; two daughters, Carolyn Darley and husband, Cliff, Frances (Annie) Newbern and husband, Norman; and one son, William (Bill) Oakley, all of Chesapeake; nine grandchildren, Cynthia Moose, Kay Walters and fiance Jeff Harwood, Chris Darley and his wife, Tammy, Mike Darley and his wife, Mary, Debbie Flowers and husband, John, Machelle Davis and husband, Rick, Kelly Lubinger, all of Chessapeake and Portsmouth, and Jamie Newbern-Jones and husband, Dale, of Hawaii and Stacey Newbern of Baltimore; 11 great-grandchildren, Katrina, Stephen and Leslie Walters, Allie, Bonnie and Cassidy Harwood, Jason and Chris Flowers, Cara Davis, Chaise Darley and Tim Hammock and wife, Penny; and one great-great-grandson, Clayton Shane Hammock; sisters-in-law, Ruby and Christine Oakley and Ruth Calvert; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Revs. Damon E. Waytt and T.M. Frye. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. Friends may join the family for visitation from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
