Call Alan Glasgow a proud papa and a proud coach.
His 15-year-old son, John, who learned how to bowl from his father, rolled his second 300 game in the Tidewater Team Challenge at Century Lanes in Hampton on March 8.
``He has learned quite a bit,'' the elder Glasgow said of his son, whom he coaches in Youth League. ``He's got good mechanics and coordination skills.''
John, a sophomore at Franklin High School, began bowling in eighth grade after Alan Glasgow took him to the alleys. John picked up a ball, placed his small fingers in the large holes meant for adults and began his new passion. Two years ago at Century Lanes, John recorded his first perfect game.
``We disagree on some things and he'll tell me just to go out there and to try and roll,'' said John. ``I just try to go out and bowl my game.''
Bowling hasn't always been the younger Glasgow's favorite sport.
``He played a little baseball and basketball at the time he started bowling,'' said Alan Glasgow. ``He wanted to learn how to bowl and one day he just picked up the ball and started doing it.''
Alan Glasgow took his son to Wichita, Kan., this summer to participate in a college bowling camp and to learn more about his game. He hopes John may someday be a candidate for a bowling scholarship. But he added, ``John must make good grades or he won't bowl at all.''
Glasgow is not any harder on his own son than the 40 or 60 kids he coaches in the Youth League.
``I just want them all to do well and not give up participating in other stuff, like the band or Girl Scouts,'' he said.
