U.S. Navy retired Capt. Jesse Hogan Motes Jr. died April 5, 1997, after an extended illness.
He was a retired Navy captain and decorated veteran of the Pacific Theater in World War II. Born in Mountville, S.C., he was a son of Jesse Hogan and Rosa Lee Fuller Motes. He attended Clemson College before entering the U.S. Naval Academy where he graduated in 1931. He married the late Elizabeth Jessie Lewis of Alexandria, La. in 1933 and the late Marian Boozer of Norfolk in 1977, after the death of his first wife.
He served in the Pacific during World War II and was involved in 11 major engagements including Wake Island, the Southern Solomons, the Marshall, Gilberts and Hollandia, rescue of the survivors of the cruiser Helena from a Japanese held island, and the battle of Okinawa. He served also in the Korean War. His awards include the Bronze Star and a Gold Star in lieu of a second Bronze Star for his Pacific service. After his retirement in 1960, he lived in Columbia, S.C., before relocating to Virginia Beach. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club.
He leaves a son, Jesse Hogan Motes III of Newburyport, Mass.; two sisters, Caroline Rasor of Laurens, S.C., Clemmie Wilson of Kingstree, S.C.; two brothers, Col. Preston Motes, U.S. Army retired of Columbia, Fuller Motes of Mountville; three grandchildren, Kathleen Motes Bennewitz of Minneapolis, Minn., Sharon Motes Helmke of Kingwood, Texas, Robert Hogan Motes of Baltimore, Md.; two great-grandsons, Blake and Sean Helmke, and two twin great-granddaughters, Mary McPherson and Elizabeth Roberts Bennewitz.
There will be a visitation in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, from 4 to 6 p.m. today. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, 1997 in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. with full military honors.
