Harold Vincent Curtis, 78, son of the late Sheppard Brown Curtis and Mary Elizabeth McDonald, died Monday, April 7, 1997, in a local hospital.
A native of Hampton, he was an Army veteran serving in the Korean War and World War II. For 42 years, Mr. Curtis worked for C&P Telephone Co. until his retirement in 1982. A founding member of the Church of the Holy Family, Mr. Curtis served as the Finance Committee chairman during the construction of the church. He was also an usher for several years.
Mr. Curtis was an active member of the community throughout his life and served on many community and civic related boards including, CWA President of Newport News Local No. 5, life member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, delegate to the Silver Haired Legislature, member of the Virginia Power Energy Share Committee, past president of the Lynnhaven Colony Civic League, and member of the Board of Directors for the Russell House.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Congleton Curtis; his three children, Harold V. ``Skip'' Curtis Jr. and his wife Vicky, Ann Kay Curtis Walters and her husband, Steve, and W. Keith Curtis and his wife, Kim; three grandchildren, Dustin Walters, Jeremy Walters and Brittany Curtis of Virginia Beach; and two brothers, Vernon Curtis of Hampton, and Earl Curtis of Willamsburg. Mr. Curtis was preceded in death by three brothers, Alex, Oliver and Raymond Curtis.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 7:30 p.m. today in Church of the Holy Family by Father Richard Mooney and Father William Pitt. The family will receive friends in the church today from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The procession to the cemetery will begin at the Church of the Holy Family at 11 a.m. Friday, April 11, 1997, to Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations may be made to a favorite charity in Mr. Curtis's memory. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Laskin Road Chapel, is handling arrangements.
