NORSHIPCO SUBCONTRACTOR DIES AFTER FALL FROM CRANE

A subcontractor who fell about 25 feet from a crane at Norshipco late Tuesday night has died at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

The man was identified as 21-year-old Christopher Garris of the 3600 block of Gum Drive in Portsmouth. He died at 12:50 a.m. Wednesday.

Authorities said the accident happened about 10:15 p.m. at the plant in the 500 block of W. Berkley Ave.

Jack Goldhorn, a spokesman for Norfolk Fire and Paramedical Services, said Garris was working on a U.S. flag vessel when he fell. When rescuers arrived, they discovered he had sustained severe head injuries and rushed him to the hospital's trauma unit. KEYWORDS: ACCIDENT GENERAL FATALITY
