A 26-year-old man was in critical condition Sunday night with burns over his head and upper body after his estranged wife allegedly set him on fire, police said. The woman was arrested.
Police said the incident occurred about 5 p.m. in the 300 block of Tappan Ave. as the man, Kristopher L. Alsing, arrived at his home with a friend. Teresa M. Alsing of the 200 block of Herbert Ave. was allegedly waiting there for her husband.
Witnesses told police that she struck him over the head with a bottle filled with a flammable liquid and that his upper body burst into flames. The man rolled on the lawn, trying the douse the flames. The woman fled.
Paramedics arrived a few minutes later and had the man taken to the Burn Trauma Unit at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Police arrested Teresa Alsing without incident at her home. She was being held in the city jail late Sunday on charges of aggravated malicious wounding, manufacturing an explosive device and arson. KEYWORDS: ACCIDENT GENERAL FIRE ASSAULT DOMESTIC DISPUTE
