J. SNEED SCHMIDT

Retired U.S. Navy Capt. J. Sneed Schmidt, 83, passed away Sunday, April 27, 1997, in Fleet Landing.

He was born July 15, 1913, in St. Joseph, Mo. He retired from the U.S. Navy after 30 years of service and had worked for General Dynamics, Groton, Conn., for 10 years. He was a 1937 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, where he was an All-American football player known as the ``Flying Dutchman.''

He is survived by his six daughters, Alice Callistro of Stockton, Calif., Letitia Becker of Virginia Beach, Linda Krause of Port Gamble, Wash., Christine Greenberg of Annandale, N.J., Mary Ellen Clark of Salem, Mass., and Dorothy Petre of Marblehead, Mass.; two sisters, Dorothy Shaw of Arkansas and Marie Austin of Georgia; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, who died in 1977.

His funeral with full military honors will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 2, 1997, in the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md. Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, Jacksonville Beach, Fla., is in charge. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
