STORES HAVE INGREDIENTS FOR THROWING MEXICAN FIEST

MONDAY is Cinco de Mayo, the Mexican celebration marking the anniversary of a victorious battle over the French in 1862. Celebrate with Mexican fare and take advantage of these specials:

Jalapeno peppers are 99 cents a pound, red bell peppers are 99 cents each and avocados are two for $1 at Farm Fresh. Wash down the fiery cuisine with Corona beer, $9.49 for a 12-pack, also at Farm Fresh.

Sixteen-ounce cans of Old El Paso refried beans are 69 cents, Martha White Mexican corn bread mix is priced at two for $1.29 and 8-ounce packages of Sargento Cheddar or Mexican blend cheese are $1.99 with your VIC card at Harris Teeter.

In the meat departments, Rack & Sack has boneless chuck roast for 98 cents a pound. Whole pork picnics are 68 cents a pound, value packs of USDA select boneless rib-eye steaks are $3.88 a pound and the certified Angus Beef rib-eyes are $4.98 a pound at Farm Fresh.

Hamburgers and hot dogs are the dinner of the day at Harris Teeter stores. Ground chuck is 89 cents a pound and a 16-ounce package of Oscar Mayer meat weiners is 99 cents, with your VIC card.

Hannaford has boneless shoulder roasts for $1.39 a pound, Hillshire Farms kielbasa for $1.99 a package and farm-raised catfish fillets for $2.99 a pound.

Perdue Oven Stuffer Roaster breast is $1.49 a pound, boneless smoked ham is $1.28 a pound and boneless pork chops are $1.98 a pound at 3 Stores 1 Roof.

Cook a turkey breast this weekend and have leftovers for sandwiches. Farmer Jack has 4- to 7-pound turkey breasts for 99 cents a pound.

Bread specials include Sunbeam Old Fashioned for 79 cents at Hannaford and 12-packs of hot dog or hamburger buns for 79 cents each at 3 Stores 1 Roof.

In the produce departments, Farmer Jack is featuring sweet white corn, 8 ears for $1 and whole watermelons for $2.97 each. Farm Fresh has mangos, two for $1; cauliflower, 88 cents a head; and green beans for 58 cents a pound.

Bananas are 27 cents a pound and broccoli is 77 cents a bunch at Hannaford.

First-of-the-season peaches are 59 cents a pound and artichokes are 39 cents each at 3 Stores 1 Roof.

Edy's Grand ice cream is $1.99 a half-gallon at Farmer Jack. At Hannaford, large store-brand eggs are 77 cents a dozen.

Don't forget Fido. Selected varieties of Alpo Prime Cuts dog food (13.5-ounce cans) are two for 79 cents at Harris Teeter.

Specials at Super Kmart this week include selected Kellogg's cereals (Frosted Mini-Wheats, Rice Krispies and Corn Pops), two boxes for $5. In addition, Kellogg's and Kmart will each donate 10 cents for every box sold to the March of Dimes. ILLUSTRATION: POST
