JOSEPH F. DOWNING JR.

Joseph Francis Downing Jr., 75, a resident of The Greens for more than 10 years, died Thursday May 1, 1997, in Northampton-Accomack Memorial Hospital.

Born in Keller, he was the son of Joseph Francis Downing and Lyde Turlington Downing. He was a retired Keller postmaster with 28 years service and a member of Melfa United Methodist Church, Ocean Lodge (NU)116 AF&AM, Portsmouth Scottish Rite Bodies, Khedive Temple, Easter Shore Yacht and Country Club and a past member of Central Shore Lions Club.

Survivors include a brother, Richard Downing and sister-in-law, Bea, of Belle Haven; a niece and nephew; sister-in-law, Becky Reade of Parksley; two great-nieces and a great-great-niece.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Edge Hill Cemetery, Accomac, by the Rev. Weldon Ray Crockett. Memorial contributions may be made to Melfa United Methodist Church Building Fund, c/o Mr. Dixie Grinnalds, P.O. Box 276, Melfa, Va. 23410. Williams-Onancock Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
