Horace Lee Carter, 67, of the 500 block of Murphy's Mill Road, died May 1, 1997, in Obici Hospital.
Retired as a maintenance supervisor on a ferry boat for VDOT, he was a native of Suffolk and a member of First Baptist Church, the Adult Bible Class, and the senior mixed bowling league at Pinboy's Western Branch. He was a U.S. Army veteran of Korea and the son of the late Herbert E. Carter Sr. and Ruby Horton Carter.
Survivors include his wife, Alma King Carter; daughter, Shirley Jean Walker of Windsor; son, William Gary Turner of Lawrenceville, Va.; three sisters, Mae Carter Harrell of Portsmouth, Mary Carter Everette of Colonial Heights, Va., and Florence Carter White of Suffolk; two brothers, Herbert Earl Carter Jr. of Portsmouth and Robert Carter of Petersburg; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Harrell Funeral Home, Suffolk, by the Rev. Charles W. Thompson. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. Friends may join the family in the funeral home Sunday from 4 to 5 p.m. and other times in the residence. Memorials are suggested to the Nansemond Suffolk Rescue Squad, P.O.
