OVERDOWN EVANS

Overdown ``PopPop'' Evans, 92, of the 100 block of W. Lorengo Ave. died May 2, 1997, in his residence.

He had retired as a chief cook from the U.S. Coast and Geodetic, now known as NOAA. A native of Milton Fla., Mr. Evans had served as a military policeman in World War II. He served in the Coast Guard and Merchant Marine. After the war, he brought troops back from Italy. He helped open the YMCA in downtown Norfolk on Feb. 12, 1972. He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting as well as attending wrestling matches. He also loved taking care of his garden. He was a member of the 60 Plus Club at Ocean View and the Moose Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Bessie L. Evans; two stepdaughters, Alice Tamoria and Dorothy Byers, both of Norfolk; a granddaughter, Debi Nogle of Virginia Beach; two great-grandchildren, Christine Scott and Melissa Scott, both of Virginia Beach; and many other grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, by the Rev. Dick Baker. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. today. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
