Sheriff's deputy quits after being charged with sexual battery

A 36-year-old veteran sheriff's deputy has resigned after being charged with abduction and aggravated sexual battery over the weekend.

Stephen L. Daniel, of the 1100 block of Virginia Ave. in Chesapeake, a 10-year veteran with the sheriff's department, was a counselor in the work release program, said John M. Downs, a department spokesman.

The victim in the alleged attack is a 25-year-old woman.

Daniel resigned Monday, said Dave Hughes, a police spokesman. Daniel was released from jail on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond.

Man's death behind mall considered suspicious

A Virginia Beach man was found dead behind the Great American Outlet Mall Monday night at about 7:30 p.m. Police called the death suspicious and have sent the body to the crime lab for an autopsy.

There were no apparent wounds or signs of trauma, police said. Police said the body was found by someone walking through the back parking lot of the outlet mall. The passer-by told a security officer who confirmed the death and called police. KEYWORDS: SEXUAL ASSAULT ABDUCTION CHESAPEAKE SHERIFF'S
