Sheriff's deputy quits after being charged with sexual battery
A 36-year-old veteran sheriff's deputy has resigned after being charged with abduction and aggravated sexual battery over the weekend.
Stephen L. Daniel, of the 1100 block of Virginia Ave. in Chesapeake, a 10-year veteran with the sheriff's department, was a counselor in the work release program, said John M. Downs, a department spokesman.
The victim in the alleged attack is a 25-year-old woman.
Daniel resigned Monday, said Dave Hughes, a police spokesman. Daniel was released from jail on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond.

Man's death behind mall considered suspicious
A Virginia Beach man was found dead behind the Great American Outlet Mall Monday night at about 7:30 p.m. Police called the death suspicious and have sent the body to the crime lab for an autopsy.
