Stuart Oconnor Barker, 89, of the 100 block of Old Drive, died Tuesday May 6, 1997 in a Virginia Beach hospital.
Mr. Barker was born in Richmond and was the son of the late Burk O. and Viola B. Barker. He was the widower of Dorothy Freeman Barker. He was also predeceased by a son, Stuart E. Barker, and a sister, Emily Barker Long. He was retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. Mr. Barker was a founding member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, a past member of its vestry and trustee of the parish. He was a member of the Order of the Founders and Patriots of America Historical Society and a board member and past president of the Norfolk County Historical Society. Mr. Barker was the author of ``A History of St. Bride's Parish and St. Thomas Episcopal Church 1607-1988).
Survivors include his son, Robert E. Barker of Virginia Beach; two brothers, Burk O. Barker and Durward W. Barker, both of Richmond; two grandchildren, Stuart Estes Barker of Atlanta and Anne Barker Smith of Richmond; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Thomas Episcopal Church by the Rev. Michael Jones and the Rev. William Hoffman. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at 117 Old Drive. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church or the Norfolk County Historical Society.
