JOHN J. BRADY

Retired U.S. Navy BMC John J. Brady, retired captain U.S. Merchant Marine, passed away May 9, 1997, after several weeks of illness.

He is survived by his wife of over 45 years, Renate H. Bartels Brady; his three remaining sons, Kevin W. Brady, Kenneth J. Brady, Kai Patrick Brady; daughters-in-law, Brenda L. Brady and Elizabeth Brady; also numerous in-laws in Germany.

He served 30 years in the U.S. Navy and participated in World War II and the conflicts in Korea and Vietnam. After retiring from military service he obtained a master's certificate and captained different vessels for nine years, finishing his career as ferry captain on the James River Ferry.

Capt. John was well-loved by many and known for his quick Irish wit and humor. He was the grandson of Irish immigrants and traveled to the old country several times. He loved living in Suffolk, watching the traffic on the Nansemond River and enjoying the peace and quiet of his neighborhood. He will be sorely missed.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 14, at St. Johns Episcopal Church, Chuckatuck, with Fr. Webster Maughan officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the church. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
