STRONG APRIL FOR PORT: The port of Hampton Roads had a very strong April. Cargo volume across the docks of the state-owned marine terminals grew 19.7 percent compared to last April, Virginia International Terminals Inc. announced. According to VIT, the terminals it manages for the Virginia Port Authority handled 784,000 tons of cargo in April, up from 655,000 last April. So far in 1997, the state terminals have handled nearly 3 million tons of cargo, a 12.8 percent gain over the 2.66 million tons in the first four months of 1996. Joseph A. Dorto, VIT's chief executive and general manager, said the growth is coming in all trade lanes. The growth is so strong that it's nearly outstripping the port's capacity. ``We have the same equipment at (Norfolk International Terminals) as four years ago, but we're doing 40 percent more volume,'' he said. The costs, added overtime for labor in particular, depressed VIT's April income, Dorto said.
