Luther Rosewell Stanley Jr., 72, died June 4, 1997, in Virginia Beach.
A machinist mate first class in the U.S. Navy, he retired in 1965 after 20 years and also retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as an inspector. He was a native of Alabama and the widower of Carol L. Stanley.
He was a member of Portsmouth Moose Lodge No. 898 and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam.
Survivors include two daughters, Sharon S. Coates of Chesapeake and Ginni S. Durham of Charlotte, N.C.; two sons, J. Oscar Stanley and Michael D. Stanley, both of Chesapeake; two sisters, Sara Ann Winberry of Texas and Dory Gay of Alabama; three brothers, Max Stanley and Wallace Stanley, both of Alabama, and Donald Stanley of Georgia; eight grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by a son, Russell W. Stanley.
A graveside funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Bradford L. Phillips. The family will receive friends at Snellings Funeral Home, George Washington Highway Chapel, from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
