3 NEW ODU APPOINTEES AMONG ALLEN'S CHOICES

Chesapeake's deputy school superintendent, William E. Russell, and two civic activists were appointed Friday to Old Dominion University's Board of Visitors.

George F. Allen also named two prominent Republican conservatives to other college boards. William P. Barr, a former U.S. attorney general, is joining the College of William and Mary's board. William Kristol, a leading conservative writer and editor and publisher of The Weekly Standard, was appointed to the George Mason University board.

The ODU appointments are:

Russell, a Portsmouth resident, who is also pastor at the New Hope Baptist Church in Suffolk. He replaces Anne Whittemore, who resigned from the board last month when she was appointed by Allen to the State Council of Higher Education.

Mary C. Haddad of Chesapeake, chairwoman of the American Heart Association's board of directors. She is also a member of the board of directors of the Future of Hampton Roads and a former member of the Chesapeake Fine Arts Commission.

Haddad succeeds Anne B. Shumadine, a Norfolk lawyer who has been rector of ODU's board since last summer.

Patricia W. Perry of Virginia Beach, a member on the boards of United Way South Hampton Roads and the Virginia Congressional Awards. She received a bachelor's degree in clinical psychology from ODU. She succeeds J. Michael Pitchford.

Allen also reappointed to ODU's board Edward L. Hamm Jr. of Virginia Beach, president of a management and engineering consulting firm.

In addition to Barr, the new board members at William and Mary are Susan A. Magill, chief of staff for Sen. John W. Warner, and Regina B. Schofield, legislative assistant for the International Council of Shopping Center.

J. Edward Grimsley, former chairman of the editorial board and current weekly columnist for the Richmond Times-Dispatch, was reappointed to William and Mary's board.

In the last year, Allen's other high-level appointments to university boards have included former U.S. Attorney General Edwin Meese III at George Mason and former Secretary of State Lawrence S. Eagleburger at W & M.

All board appointments are for four years. KEYWORDS: APPOINTMENT OLD DOMINION UNIVERSITY BOARD OF VISITORS
