LOCAL SCENE

CHESAPEAKE

MONTERO HONORED: Dr. Juan M. Montero II was presented an honorary doctorate of humane letters during Old Dominion University's commencement program last month. He was cited for his leadership role in furthering the mission of ODU, for his contributions to the medical community, the Filipino community and to society in general. Montero is in private practice in general and thoracic surgery and serves on the board of trustees of the Educational Foundation of Old Dominion.

VIRGINIA BEACH

HADDAWAY PRESIDENT OF SECRETARIES ASSOCIATION: The Professional Secretaries International, Tidewater chapter, elected Debbi Haddaway president for the 1997-98 year. She is an executive assistant at Max Media.

KRONZ JOINS ARCHITECTURAL FIRM: Susan Kronz was named a senior interior designer with CMSS Architects. She will focus on the firm's corporate planning projects. She was previously employed by the U.S. Department of State for 10 years.

NORFOLK

ROYER ELECTED PRESIDENT: Dr. Thomas C. Royer was elected president of the Tidewater Academy of Family Physicians.

LAFOND AND BRADSHER NAMED ASSOCIATES: Stephen D. LaFond and Paul D. Bradsher were named associates at the law firm of Randolph D. Stowe. LaFond brings 11 years experience in the private practice of law and 12 years of property and casualty claims experience as a director, officer and chief claim executive of insurance an re-insurance companies. Bradsher has experience in general litigation.

PENINSULA

ATTORNEY ELECTED TO REGIONAL DIRECTOR OF JAYCEES: Andy Herrick, a Williamsburg attorney, was elected Atlantic regional director for the Virginia Jaycees. He will serve in an advisory capacity to the 13 Jaycee chapters in southeastern Virginia. He previously served as president and management development vice president of the Williamsburg Jaycees.

VIRGINIA

PHILLIPS APPOINTED FIRST INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT OFFICER: Eastern Shore Community College in Melfa appointed David Phillips as the college's first institutional advancement officer. Prior to moving to the Eastern Shore in 1996 to renovate and open Wilson-Lee House Bed & Breakfast in Cape Charles, he was director of corporate, foundation and government support for the Prospect Park Alliance in Brooklyn, N.Y.
