CHESAPEAKE
Great Bridge school
gives $3,700 to park
Students at Great Bridge Middle School-South presented a check for $3,700 to Northwest River Park Monday, bringing the total amount of money they have raised for the southern Chesapeake park to nearly $10,000.
This is the fourth year the students have participated in the ``March for Parks'' for the benefit of the Northwest River Park.
Bill Petree, the park supervisor, said the money will be used to purchase new boats for rental at the manmade lake within the public park.
``We're very appreciative of their help and tickled that they feel attachment, take ownership, of the park,'' Petree said. Newport News
Little boy slightly hurt
by falling out of window
A young boy fell Monday from a second-floor window in his house but was not seriously hurt, police reported.
The boy, who will turn 2 in August, was found awake, alert and crying after falling from the window around 6 p.m. on Culpepper Avenue, off Warwick Boulevard. He was in good condition Monday night in Riverside Hospital, with no broken bones, police said.
Police said the boy was playing with his 4-year-old brother when he got past a window screen, hung out the window from his waist, then fell at least 10 feet to a dresser below the window, then another 5 feet to the ground.
Police did not release the boy's name and did not say how he got out the window. They said no criminal charges are expected.
Police reminded parents to take certain precautions with windows in children's rooms: Open them from the top, not bottom; secure them at the bottom with safety pins available at most hardware stores; and teach children that screens, unlike windows, will collapse if they are leaned on.
