RAYMOND A. TARKINGTON SR.

Raymond Ashby (R.A.) Tarkington Sr., 86, of the 100 block of W. Queen St., died Tuesday, June 10, 1997, in Chowan Hospital.

A native of Washington County, Mr. Tarkington was a son of the late Frank Ceaton and Elizabeth Knowles Tarkington and the husband of the late Anita Harris Tarkington.

Mr. Tarkington had served as a regional director for the Southern Life Insurance Co. and later studied and became an N.C. Magistrate serving 25 years in Chowan County. He retired as magistrate at age 79. He and his wife were owners of the Tarkington Clothing Store in Edenton.

Mr. Tarkington was a member of the Edenton Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and in the church choir. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, Shriner and member of Eastern Star where he was past worthy patron. He was also past master of the Unanimity Lodge (NU)7 in Edenton.

Surviving Mr. Tarkington is his daughter, Ellene T. Wallin of Tucson, Ariz.; his son, Dr. R. Ashby Tarkington Jr. of Chester, Va.; three sisters, Audrey Hardison of Plymouth, N.C., Pearl Myers of Norfolk, Dora Gibbs of Belhaven, N.C; two brothers, Elbert Tarkington of Roper, N.C., Irvin Tarkington of Virginia Beach; and five grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Edenton Baptist Church by Dr. Kenneth Word. Entombment will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery with Masonic Rites. The family will be receiving friends at the residence. Evans Funeral Home of Edenton is handling arrangements. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
