COAST GUARDSMAN SENT TO PRISON FOR SEX CRIMES AGAINST 5

A Coast Guardsman was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years in prison and dishonorably discharged for sex crimes against five women shipmates.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Darrell Stirewalt, a 26-year-old married man from Clemson, S.C., was convicted by a Coast Guard jury Saturday of rape, sodomy, assault consummated by battery, indecent assault, maltreatment and adultery. He could have gotten life in prison.

All five women testified that he committed sexual offenses against them from 1995 to 1997 while they were assigned to the Coast Guard cutter Sweetgum at Mobile, Ala. KEYWORDS: SEXUAL MISCONDUCT SEX SCANDAL COAST GUARD SEXUAL
