TAX INCREASE REJECTED: The Pasquotank County Board of Commissioners has decided against a tax increase to finance more school needs and approved a $17.8 million budget for 1997-98.
The budget does include a new $95 annual trash disposal fee. The fee applies to every habitable residence, occupied or vacant.
The new trash disposal fee will raise $1.1 million, which frees money from the general fund to help pay between $800,000 and $900,000 in annual school debt service. The county owes about $22 million in school construction debts. The county charges 77 cents per $100 of property value.
Commissioner Levin Culpepper was the lone dissenter in the 5-1 vote. Commissioner W.C. Witherspoon was not present. Most of the Pasquotank County School Board attended but did not speak to the board.
