REPORT TO READERS SORTING OUT THE MAZE OF EDITORS

``I want to speak to the editor.''

``OK. Which editor?''

``You know, THE editor.''

``Well, we have two `THE editors' and a bunch of other editors, as well. Can you be more specific. . . ?''

Inspired by that sort of dialogue, which I'm on the receiving end of almost daily, I decided to devote this column to sorting out The Pilot news hierarchy.

One piece of advice: Whether you're calling with a story idea or a gripe, it helps to start with the editor who handles that topic, as opposed to THE editor. She, or he, will have to consult with that person anyway.

Or you can continue to call the public editor's office with your gripes, grumbles and even story ideas. I'm offering up these names and numbers because some callers want to speak directly with specific editors.

So clip and save this column, but not for too long. Editors are a peripatetic bunch. Two veteran editors, for example, are on the brink of retirement - Ron Speer in North Carolina and Bob Lynn, head of the photo department.

But, as of right now, here is the lineup and how news folks can be reached:

THE EDITOR: Kay Tucker Addis is the newsroom editor, in charge of the overall direction and tone of the news pages. While she doesn't personally supervise the story selection, writing, editing, photo selection and design, all the folks who do those things ultimately report to her. For that reason alone, she's a pretty busy person. But if you want to call, her number is 446-2311 (e-mail kmcgraw(AT)pilotonline.com).

Addis is NOT, however, the editor of the editorial pages and not the person to write if you're sending in an opinion piece. That duty belongs to. . .

EDITORIAL PAGE EDITOR: Keith Monroe, working with a board of associate editors, is responsible for what goes on the editorial, Perspectives (op-ed) and Commentary pages. So, if you have an opinion about an opinion, he's the one to turn to. 446-2304 (e-mail: piloted(AT)pilotonline.com but send letters and Another View submissions to letters(AT)pilotonline.com).

MANAGING EDITOR. Dennis Hartig, whom many know from his Beacon years, now manages the news report - what's going in the newspaper tomorrow, content planning, critiques, reader research. Have something to say about The Pilot's news judgment, what news stories are on A1 and the Hampton Roads front? Hartig is your man. 446-2126 (e-mail: hart(AT)pilotonline.com).

DEPUTY MANAGING EDITOR/local expertise. Tom Warhover oversees most of the local news reporting teams - the five cities; public life (local government); public safety (crime, accidents and fires, courts); education; and the Richmond staff, which covers state government news. 446-2707 (e-mail: warhov(AT)pilot online.com).

DEPUTY MANAGING EDITOR/local lens. Joyce Ingram heads up several specific reporting teams and their editors: military, features (Daily Break, Flavor, etc.), Body & Soul, sports and business. Their common goal: In addition to local reports, to present world and national news so that its relevance to Hampton Roads is self-evident. 446-2756.

DEPUTY MANAGING EDITOR/presentation. Nelson Brown is in charge of The Pilot's visual report. He oversees the editors who design the paper, choose its photographs, write the headlines, draw maps, graphics and illustrations. In other words, he determines how the paper looks. He's also responsible for quality of headlines and the national (wire) report. 446-2320.

Team/city/topic editors:

Body & Soul (environment, religion, health), Bill Henry, 446-2331.

Business, Marian Anderfuren, 446-2359.

Culture (arts and entertainment), Roberta Vowell, 446-2327.

Education/teenology/families, Debra Adams, 490-7208.

Public life (local government), Tony Germanotta, 547-9763 (e-mail: german(AT)pilotonline.com).

Public safety (police, courts), Bill Burke, 446-2589.

State/Richmond, Sue Robinson, 1-804-697-1561.

Sports, pro and college, Carl Fincke, 446-2368.

Sports, high school and community, Chic Riebel, 446-2376.

Sports, section editor, Bob Fleming, 446-2369.

Commentary, Dave Addis, 446-2726.
