Ruth R. Waters, 88, of the 800 block of Lincoln St. died July 3, 1997, in Maryview Hospital, Portsmouth.
Born in Statesville, N.C., she was the widow of W.E. Waters, former and longtime principal of I.C. Norcom High School, Portsmouth. Mrs. Waters was a retired teacher for the Portsmouth City Public School System with for more than 40 years of service. She was a member for over 80 years of St. James Episcopal Church, Portsmouth, where she was active, supported and contributed to many various activities and groups of the church. She was a charter member of Gamma Delta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.; a charter member of the Norfolk Chapter of The Girl Friends Inc.; founder and charter member of Portsmouth Chapter of the Moles Inc.; and one of the founders and member of L'Armantine.
Survivors include a daughter, Lydia Waters Thomas of North Potomac; a grandchild, Denee M. Thomas of North Potomac; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, god-children and friends.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Monday in St. James Episcopal Church, Portsmouth, by Fr. Joseph N. Green Jr. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Chesapeake. Sorority and other services will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today in Corprew Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the Athletic Department or Music Department of I.C.
