HENRY E. HOWELL JR.

Henry E. Howell Jr., 76, died in his home with his family July 7, 1997.

He was a founding partner in the law firm of Howell, Anninos & Daugherty, now Howell, Daugherty & Brown. He served as lieutenant governor of Virginia from 1971 to 1973. Prior to being elected lieutenant governor he served in the House of Delegates and Senate of Virginia. He actively supported many candidates for public office at the local, state, and national levels. Among the many campaigns he enjoyed were those of his wife, Betty, who served as a member of the Norfolk City Council for 18 years. He also actively campaigned for Hubert Humphrey, Jimmy Carter and Walter Mondale. He was a member of numerous civic, community, and professional organizations throughout his life. He served on the Board of Visitors of Old Dominion University.

In 1985 he received the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association's distinguished service award. While a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church he taught Sunday School and was superintendent of the Sunday School. He was a member of Christ and Saint Luke's Episcopal Church, where he regularly attended services.

He loved all sports, most particularly baseball. In 1946, he was temporarily a sports writer for the then Ledger-Dispatch, which was later The Ledger- Star.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth McCarty Howell; his daughter, Mary E. Howell of Norfolk; his daughter, Susan H. Howell, and her daughter, Elizabeth ``Emilie'' of Portsmouth; his son, Henry E. Howell III and his wife, Joyce Bernstein Howell, and their children, Charlotte Elizabeth and Walter Elliot; close cousins of the Waldo family, his childhood friend, Irwin M. Lewis, and his wife, Dorothy P. Lewis, and their children, the Rev. Irwin M. Lewis Jr. and Patricia L. Kauffman, and many friends and supporters.

Henry Howell loved life, family, friends, home, sports, the law, and public service.

A funeral service will be held Friday, July 11, 1997, at noon at Christ and Saint Luke's Episcopal Church, 560 W. Olney Road, Norfolk. Burial will take place following the church service at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m. at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, on Colonial Avenue, there will be a short ceremony intended to provide individuals an opportunity to express their thier appreciation of Henry Howell.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Christ and Saint Luke's Episcopal Church, The Henry Howell Archives Endowment Fund at Old Dominion University, or a cause of choice. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
