ATHLETIC DIRECTOR NAMED AT CURRITUCK COUNTY HIGH

Robert Woodley, a coach and teacher in the Edenton-Chowan School System for 24 years, has accepted the job as athletic director at Currituck County High School.

Woodley, named the North Carolina High School Athletic Association's Male Coach of the Year for the Eastern Region in 1995, will also be a physical education teacher at Currituck and an assistant coach to Reuben Godfrey on the boys basketball team.

At Edenton-Holmes High School, Woodley was the head boys basketball coach. He had also coached the baseball team for 15 years and was a junior varsity and middle school football coach.

Woodley will begin his duties at Currituck on Aug. 1. He said leaving the Edenton schools was the hardest decision he has ever had to make.

``I looked at the move as being a career opportunity to be an athletic administrator and still having an opportunity to coach,'' he said. ``I'll be leaving some mighty fine people, but I'll be going to an area with mighty fine people and a school with a reputation for fine athletics. I want to carry on that tradition.

``The hardest thing I've had to do is leave the kids I coached and the people I work with. The potential is there for Edenton to have a very good basketball team this year. It made the decision even tougher. I highly respect the Edenton-Chowan schools and the people who work there. I'm looking forward to working with the people in the Currituck area and being supportive of all the athletic programs.''

Although Woodley has no experience as an athletic director, he has coached three different sports and has studied under longtime Edenton athletic director Tom Bass.
