Helen J. Horan, a resident of Seagate Colony, died in Virginia Beach General Hospital, July 15, 1997, after a lengthy illness.
She was born in Manchester, N.H., the daughter of Denis and Margaret (Murphy) Horan. Upon graduating from Manchester Central High School, she attended and graduated from Hesser Business College. She was employed with Works Projects Administration until she joined the State Department in Washington, D.C., in 1940.
She attended the 1945 opening of the United Nations as a member of Secretary of State, Edward Stettinus' staff. She later transferred to the Foreign Service and served overseas as secretary to Ambassadors in Cairo, South Africa, Afghanistan, and Laos. She retired and returned to Manchester in 1968 and became the personal secretary to Bishop Ernest J. Primeau of the Catholic Dioceses of New Hampshire for six years. She moved to Virginia Beach in 1977.
She is survived by two sisters, Katherine Wood of Santa Monica, Calif. and Madeline McLane of Manchester, N.H.; three brothers, the Rev. Denis Horan of Nashua, N.H., the Rev. John Horan of Hudson, N.H., and Retired U.S. Navy Capt. Robert Horan of Virginia Beach; as well as several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas and William and a sister, Mary Janenda.
A Mass will be celebrated at 7:30 p.m. today at Church of the Holy Family, 1279 N. Great Neck Road Virginia Beach. The family will gather from 6:30 until 7:30 p.m. prior to the Mass to welcome friends. Burial will be in Manchester, N.H., on Wednesday July 23, 1997.
