CLEMENT S. KESTER

Clement Samuel Kester, 84, died July 14, 1997, after a lengthy illness.

A 1935 graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law, Mr. Kester was a member of the Virginia and Georgia Bar Associations and was licensed to appear before the U.S. Supreme Court. Following law school, he clerked for a U.S. District Court judge before becoming an agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 1938. During World War II, he served as an intelligence officer for the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific, retiring with the rank of commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve.

Following his military service, Mr. Kester joined the Seaboard Railroad System, where he was general claims manager for the Seaboard Airline Railroad and later assistant general solicitor for the Seaboard Coastline Railroad, now CSX, from which he retired in 1976. He then worked for several years at the T.C. Williams School of Law, University of Richmond, in career placement for law school graduates.

Mr. Kester, who lived in Norfolk until 1958, was a member of the Norfolk German Society and was a communicant of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, where he was director of the Sunday school for a number of years.

Mr. Kester was the widower of Barbara Perkins Kester and is survived by a son, Robert A. Kester; daughter, Temple Kester Joyner; three grandchildren, Dr. Meredith J. Drummond, Leslie H. Joyner and Suzanne A. Joyner, all of Richmond.

His remains rest at Bennett Funeral Home, Cutshaw Ave. Funeral services will be held at Greenwood Memorial Gardens, Goochland County, Friday at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the University of Virginia Law School Foundation or to St. Mary's Episcopal Church, River Road.
