JOSEPH A. GILLILAND JR.

Joseph A. Gilliland Jr., 76, died July 16, 1997, in a Norfolk hospital.

A native of Norfolk, he was a retired deputy U.S. marshal and a member of Kempsville Masonic Lodge No. 196, AF&AM; Khedive Shrine Temple in Chesapeake; Grice Commandery No. 16; Mid-Atlantic Association of the Shrine Motor Corp.; and member of the 111th Field Artillery, 29th Division. He was a Christian.

Survivors include his loving wife of 48 years, Laura Etta Wood Gilliland; son, Joseph A. Gilliland III and his wife, Mary Lee Gilliland, of Virginia Beach. He was the son of the late Ethel W. and Joseph A. Gilliland Sr.

A graveside funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, Friday from 7 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Crippled Children's Hospital of the Shrine, c/o Khedive Temple in Chesapeake, 645 Woodlake Drive, Chesapeake, 23320, or the American Lung Association, 1740 Broadway, New York, N.Y. 10019.
