Leonard Ralph Hicks Sr., 88, of Cradock, died Tuesday, July 22, 1997, in Portsmouth.
Mr. Hicks moved to Portsmouth from Waycross, Ga., in 1932 to work at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard after serving his apprenticeship with the Atlantic Coastline Railroad in Waycross. He spent most of his career as a supervisor in Shop 26, retiring in 1972 as a Quarterman.
He was a member of the Cradock Methodist Church and a member of Lake Drummond Masonic Lodge 178 and Port Norfolk Lodge 36.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Cecil Hires Hicks of Portsmouth; two sons, L. Ralph Hicks Jr. and his wife, Donna, and Kenneth H. Hicks and his wife, Diana, all of Virginia Beach; a sister, Virginia Pappas of Albuquerque, N.M.; a sister-in-law, Mrs. John B. Thomas of Portsmouth; five grandchildren, Janice Toben, Trey Hicks, Kim Hicks, Jennifer Hicks and Michelle Yeager; a great-granddaughter, Alexandra Toben, and a host of nephews and nieces.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 24, in Greenlawn Memorial Mausoleum Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Cradock Methodist Church, 24 Channing Ave., Portsmouth, Va. 23702. Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth, is handling arrangements.
