Nancy Powers Benner, 50, a native of Virginia Beach, died at her home in Portland on July 7, 1997.
Nancy graduated from Ferguson High, Newport News. She earned a degree in education from Mary Washington and a master's degree from the University of Virginia. She taught at Arrowhead Elementary in Virginia Beach, Elk Plain Elementary in Spanaway, Wash., and a private school in Eugene, Ore. She had an extensive career in energy conservation and design. As executive director of Portland Energy Conservation Inc., she developed a national reputation for collaborative work in educating government and commercial interests in design and operation of buildings to maximize energy efficiency.
Survivors include her husband, Richard Benner; a daughter, Janine; mother, Esther P. Sink, and stepfather, Lee Sink of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; two brothers, Scott Powers of Dillon, Mont., and Tom Powers of Virginia Beach. She was predeceased by her father, Everett S. Powers.
A memorial service was held in Nancy's garden at her home in Portland on July 20. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
