``SEINFELD'' EDITOR FROM NORFOLK HONORED WITH EMMY NOMINATION

TODAY'S LOCAL TV buzz:

In fast company - We have our very own primetime Emmy nominee in Granby High grad J.M. ``Skip'' Collector Jr., who edits the No. 1 sitcom on television, ``Seinfeld.''

The episode that elevated Collector above his peers, and secured the nomination, is ``The Pothole,'' in which a number of plot lines pop up. Remember Kramer's highway-widening project? George's losing his keys in a pothole that gets paved over? Jerry's watching a toilet blow up? Newman's mail truck catching fire?

It took a skillful editor to pull the hectic last scenes together so that everything clicked. ``There was so much energy there,'' said Collector from Los Angeles. ``I'm proud to have the nomination.''

Collector said he cut about six minutes from that hilarious episode. Wouldn't you love to see the film on the cutting room floor?

New face - WVEC's ``13 News Daybreak,'' a sleepy No. 3 in the ratings, needs a little pumping up. It could come from meteorologist Craig Moeller, who joins Channel 13 from the CBS affiliate in Salt Lake City. He worked in Columbia, Mo., before that.

Adios, Gene - Gene Kapp, who's been handling Pat Robertson's public relations at the Christian Broadcasting Network for the past five years, is leaving CBN to start a business, Kapp Communications.

He was a broadcaster for 18 years, including a hitch with WTKR. Kapp says he'll specialize in strategic planning and crisis communications. Is that the same as spin control, Gene?

Terry the trouper - After taking three weeks off to continue being treated for cancer, WVEC co-anchor Terry Zahn is back on the job at 6 and 11. He'll stay as long as his energy level is up, said news director Keith Connors.

The medicine has taken it's toll. Zahn's hair is history, so he's wearing a hairpiece. Is this guy tough or what?

Just wondering - In local news, what will be WAVY's answer to WVEC's Skylink and WTKR's Sky Center? Introducing weather guy Don Slater as Sky King, maybe?

New face, part II - It took a while, but UPN affiliate WGNT has a new general manager, C. Michael Gehring. Before accepting the offer to run Hampton Roads' only locally owned network affiliate, Gehring was the general manager at the Warner Brothers station in Atlanta.

He's also been in charge at stations in Asheville, N.C., and Bellingham, Wash. Gehring's background is in sales.

Don't forget the crayons - WAVY's compulsively casual early-morning team of Don Roberts, Christy Carlo, Jon Cash and Don DeIulio is doing something nice for kids who need the tools for class - Operation School Supplies.

WAVY is asking viewers to donate supplies for kids whose families can't afford pencils and notebooks. Catch ``WAVY News 10'' to learn the places you can drop off the supplies.

Just wondering, part II - When WTKR's reporters do their stories from Edit Bay 3, why don't they explain why they are in Edit Bay 3?

My, how time flies - Here's a name from WAVY's past: Marny Stanier. Remember her? She was a popular kid-sister type who once reported the weather for WAVY.

Stanier recently marked her 10th year with The Weather Channel, where she supervises the morning team. Now will somebody please tell me what's happened to Rhonda Glenn, who was also a big hit with Channel 10's viewers?

Revisiting Church Street - The folks at WHRO, who've already produced two nostalgic documentaries about life in Hampton Roads, will soon give us another - a history of Church Street in Norfolk from where came much of the city's black culture.

WHRO could use your photographs, film and memories of the time when Church Street prospered. Call 889-9411, extension 5. The public broadcasting station, which is partners with The Virginian-Pilot in ``This Week in Hampton Roads,'' takes it up a notch with ``Church Street.''

The TV guys are stepping aside to allow Marvin Lake of The Pilot to host. Start when the red light comes on, Marvin.

Long trip - How do you get from Blacksburg, Va., to a spot co-anchoring ``E! News Daily'' on the E! Entertainment Channel in Los Angeles? Practice. Practice. Practice.

Gina St. John moved to radio in Cleveland after earning her degree at Virginia Tech. The next stop was an FM station in Los Angeles.
