AMANDA COLE'S 2 RECORDS SPARK CAROLANNE FARMS TO 14 WINS

ANOTHER ALL-STAR competition meant another handful of ribbons for Amanda Cole Saturday.

Cole won three events, broke two records and guided relay teams to two second-place finishes as Carolanne Farms won 14 races during the Virginia Beach Swim League All-Star Meet at Little Neck Swim Club.

``I worked really hard (last) week because I knew I had competition in the (butter-) fly,'' Cole said, ``and I wasn't going to let anyone beat me.''

Beat her in an event in which she held the record? Please.

Cole went out and established a new record of 30.72 to win the 14-and-under 50 fly. In her two previous individual events, she won the 50 breaststroke (37.74) and 100 IM (1:11.17). She already held records in both races and managed to set a record in the 100 IM.

``I had the plan of just having fun,'' said Cole, decked out in her Batman swim suit.

In addition, she helped the mixed 14-and-under 200 freestyle relay (1:59.54) and the mixed 18-and-under 200 medley relay (2:08.17) to second-place finishes.

Cole was one of several multi-winners for Carolanne Farms. Tim Norton and sister Anne helped the team to six victories.

Tim Cole broke the record in the boys 14-and-under 50 fly with a time of 29.11. Earlier, he swam to victories in the 50 backstroke (31.44) and 100 IM (1:06.94). He was also part of the second place mixed 14-and-under 200 free and mixed 18-and-under 200 medley relays.

Anne Cole won the girls 12-and-under 50 fly (33.66) and 100 IM (1:14.72) and anchored the winning girls 100 free relay (58.79). She also placed second in the 50 back (36.09) behind teammate Kelly Freeburn (35.17).

Morgan Gerek was another triple winner for Carolanne.

Morgan broke her own record in the girls 14-and-under 50 back (33.22), won the 50 free (29.43) and anchored the winning girls 200 free relay (2:03.31).

Tiffany Pearsall, who won the girls 12-and-under 50 free (30.94), was Carolanne's other first-place finisher.

Pembroke Meadows, led by Kathleen Harris, was tied with Great Bridge for the second most victories on the day with nine.

Harris won the 8-and-under 25 fly (19.05), 25 breast (23.19), the 50 free (38.84) and anchored the winning 8-and-under 100 free relay (1:16.71).

Brenda Jones, who had not competed in the city championships since she was 12, helped Green Run to four of its six victories.

She won the 18-and-under 50 breast (37.45), 50 fly (32.22), 50 free (29.94) and swam opening leg for the winning 18-and-under 200 free relay (1:55.16). ILLUSTRATION: Photos by L. TODD SPENCER
