DONALD J. SELIG

Donald Joseph ``Don'' Selig, M.D., Ph.D., 54, of the 100 block of Continental Plaza, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 1997, at The Duke University Medical Center in Durham.

He was coordinator of Medical/Clinical Services at the Albemarle Mental Health Center in Elizabeth City. A native of Jamaica, N.Y., Dr. Selig was the son of Edith Gordon Selig of New York City and the late George Raymond Selig.

Besides his mother, survivors include two daughters, Heather Kwakye of Detroit, Mich., Elizabeth Selig of St. Louis, Mo.; a son, Kevin Selig of Vancouver, B.C.; and a companion, Bonnie L. Robertson of the residence; and a grandchild.

Dr. Selig received his bachelor's degree at the University of Vermont of Burlington, Vt., his Ph.D. in Immunology at Washington University in St. Louis, and his M.D. at St. Louis University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He was coordinator of Medical/Clinical Services and a staff psychiatrist at the Albemarle Mental Health Center, Elizabeth City. His former appointments include: chief resident in psychiatry at the Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine in Norfolk; resident of pathology at St. Louis University Group Hospitals, St. Louis, Mo.; toxicologist with Ralph Nader's Health Research Group in Washington, D.C.; and assistant professor of Biology at Western New England College in Springfield, Mass.

Dr. Selig was board certified in Psychiatry and Diplomate, National Board of Medical Examiners. His most recent appointments include clinical assistant professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science, Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine in Norfolk, Medical Staff at Chowan Hospital in Edenton, N.C., and Medical Staff at Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City. He was a member of the N.C. Psychiatric Association, American Psychiatric Association/ Psychiatric Society of Virginia/Tidewater Academy of Psychiatry; Society for Occupational and Environmental Health; American Association for the Advancement of Science, Sigma Xi (Science Honorary); Physicians for National Health Program; Physicians for Social Responsibility, Medical Society of Virginia, Physicians for Productive Health and was a recipient of the Physicians Recognition Award for Continuing Education.

A memorial service will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in Cann Memorial Presbyterian Church, Elizabeth City, by the Rev. Whitfield Bass and Mr. Sam Jones. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Community Prescription Project, 108 N. Road St., Elizabeth City. Blood donations to the American Red Cross will also be greatly appreciated.
