HUBERT J. DAVIS SR.

Hubert Jackson Davis Sr., 93, of the 400 block of Leavell Road died Aug. 11, 1997.

He was a native of Richlands, Va., and a retired science supervisor for Portsmouth Public Schools. Mr. Davis was a fellow of the Virginia Academy of Science; past president of Portsmouth Library Board and Friends of the Library; past president of Portsmouth Torch Club and International Director; and author of books on Virginia folklore, including ``The Great Dismal Swamp.''

Survivors include his son, Hubert J. Davis Jr. of Wyoming; two grandchildren, Suzanne Zaremski and J.D. Davis; and a great-grandchild, Timothy J. Zaremski.

A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Oak Hill Cemetery, Fredericksburg, Va. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today. Memorial donations may be made to the Friends of the Portsmouth Public Library. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
