WILLIAM H. CARTER

William H. Carter, 49, passed away July 27, 1997, in Charleston, S.C.

Born in Kirksville, Mo., Nov. 23, 1947, Mr. Carter was the son of William and Pauline Carter. A 1965 graduate of Lone Jack High School, Lone Jack, Mo., he lived in the Kansas City area until joining the U.S. Navy in 1967.

Retiring with the rank of petty officer first class in 1987, Mr. Carter received the following commendations during his years of Naval service: four Good Conduct Awards; Navy Unit Commendation; National Defense Service Medal; two Meritorious Unit Commendations; three Sea Service Deployment Ribbons; Navy Expeditionary Medal; Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Star; Vietnam Campaign Medal with device; Letter of Commendation and Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist Breast Insignia. He was employed by Dyn Marine Services as a supply officer and storekeeper.

He was preceded in death by his mother, his brother, Robert Carter, and a niece, Amanda Brown. He is survived by his loving companion, Edith Suess; his father and stepmother, William and Alice Carter of Grain Valley, Mo.; a brother, Terry Carter of Lewisburg, Tenn.; four sisters, Darlene Merritt of Puyallup, Wash., Nancy Adams of Harrisonville, Mo., Deborah Tignor of Butler, Mo., and Paula Andrews of Peculiar, Mo.; stepbrother, Ron Affolter of Columbia, Mo.; stepsister, Brenda Coolidge of Topeka, Kan.; seven nieces and seven nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek Chapel, located at Gate 5, with burial at sea. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
