Jon Uransky of Norfolk finished 39th in the preliminary men's all-around competition at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships Wednesday at McNichols Sports Arena. The top 24 advanced to tonight's finals.
Uransky, a 20-year-old rising sophomore at Penn State who represents Virginia Beach's Gymstrada, posted an all-around score of 45.00. He scored 7.20 in free exercise, 7.50 on the pommel horse, 6.35 on still rings, 8.30 on the vault, 7.25 on the parallel bars and 8.40 on the high bar.
Two Virginia Beach athletes, Katie McFarland and Cory Fritzinger, are participating in the preliminary senior women's competition, which began Thursday night. Results were not available at press time. The finals are scheduled for Saturday night.
McFarland and Fritzinger both compete for Gymstrada.
Alexis Brion, a highly-regarded athlete from Gymstrada, is not competing at the nationals because of an injury.
