Mary B. Gotthelf, 86, most recently of Virginia Beach, died Aug. 24, 1997.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Feb. 22, 1911, she was the daughter of the late John Benten and the Baroness Gerarda Broussard Benten. Upon the death of her sister in September 1994, Mary relocated from Mountaintop, Pa., to her new home in Windermere Nursing Home, Virginia Beach.
Mary was a graduate of Illinois State University and Pennsylvania State University with a bachelor's degree in Art Education. She also graduated from the Chicago Art Institute, and attended Crane College, Chicago. Mary exhibited Summer Paintings at Guy Wiggins Art Colony, Essex, Conn. Mary assisted the famous Jane Adams of Hull House in Chicago, working with young adults. Prior to her retirement in June 1973, she held numerous positions throughout her teaching career. Mary was an art instructor, supervisor, director and critic for Buffalo State College art students.
Mary's passion was art and travel. She toured extensively throughout the world - four trips by ship and 25 by plane.
Mary was preceded in death by her two brothers, Thomas Luke Benten and Luke Anthony Benten and her sister, Jane Benten Scarano and husband, Harry Gotthelf.
Survivors include her niece and nephew, Lucia and John Forte and grand-niece and nephews, Jenna Rose Forte, Danny, Tony, all of Virginia Beach.
Mary Gotthelf wished to be buried near her sister in St. Mary's Cemetery, Sugar Notch, Pa. Arrangements are being handled by Graham-McCune Funeral Home, Mountaintop, Pa. 18707. A Mass of Resurrection will take place at St. Jude's Church, Mountaintop. A memorial service will be held at Windermere Nursing Home by Chaplain Jim Fedor.
