N-SA GRAD COACHES AGAINST ALMA MATER, FORMER COACH

Back in the '70s, John T. Bangley was a guy who threw touchdowns and led Nansemond-Suffolk Academy to victories. Friday evening, however, Bangley will try to take a victory from his old school and former coach, Terry Crigger, when Windsor hosts the Saints.

``I'm looking forward to it,'' said Bangley, N-SA class of 1979, who has replaced Tom Austin as the Dukes head coach. ``I've never been in a position to do something like it. I think it's unique. I look forward to the challenge because he (Crigger) is a good coach and they have a good football team.''

The Saints-Dukes game is one of four involving Western Tidewater teams Friday night. Also, Lakeland hosts Woodside, Isle of Wight plays at Kenston Forest and Southampton Academy hosts Harrell's Christian.

Here's a capsule view of Friday's 7:30 p.m. openers.

Nansemond-Suffolk at Windsor Last year's records: N-SA (6-4); Windsor (0-10)

Outlook: Windsor's defense will have to avoid being exploited as it was a year ago when Warren Carroll scored on runs of 55 and 92 yards in a 25-0 victory. ``We're doing some things to keep the ball in our hands and out of Warren Carroll's,'' Bangley said. In addition to Carroll, the Dukes have to stop a veteran offense which features fullback Mike Barrett and quarterback J.M. Nemish.

Woodside at Lakeland Last year's records: Woodside (0-10); Lakeland (6-4)

Outlook: A physical battle is anticipated between a pair of schools that are not expected to win many games this season. Woodside is a second-year school which only dresses 30 players but should present a challenge with its Wing-T offense. ``Everyone I play is running the Wing-T, which is good because the more we see it, the better we will do against it,'' Lakeland coach Ed Smither said. The Cavaliers have to overcome the loss of its front line to graduation, and one of the area's premier runners, Travis Rawls, who is an academic casualty.

Isle of Wight at Kenston Forest Last year's records: IOW (6-5); Kenston Forest (not available)

Outlook: The Chargers plan to pick up where they left off last season: Van and Griffin Williams, and Justin Harrington running opponents into the ground.

Harrell's Christian at Southampton Academy Last year's records: Harrell's Christian (not available); Southampton Academy (9-2)

Outlook: The return of Bland Pope and Adam Webb should bring a spark to the offense. However, the Raiders have concerns at linebacker and nose tackle with the loss of Michael Beale, Brandon Applewhite and Steve Hartson.
