JOHN J. SCIALDONE

John J. Scialdone, 79, of 7400 block of Rebel Road, died Aug. 26, 1997, at DePaul Hospital.

A well-known cookbook author, Mr. Scialdone was born on June 24, 1918, in Yonkers, N.Y. and was the son of Sebastian and Maria Scialdone. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and moved to Norfolk in 1947, where he started the Norfolk Beauty Academy and a number of other businesses. His life-long interest in preserving his Italian heritage and the food of his youth led to his writing of two cookbooks, ``A Neapolitan Peasant's Cookbook,'' published in 1987, and ``An Italian Peasant's Cookbook,'' published in 1996 and cited by the Italian-American Foundation as one of 17 books on its selected reading list for a better understanding of life in an Italian village. Mr. Scialdone was also a consultant for several local restaurants and a frequent guest on local radio and television shows, discussion food and cooking.

One of eight children, he is survived by his wife Rose; his son, Claude and daughter-in-law Dana Scialdone; two grandchildren, Joshua and Hannah Scialdone; a sister, Mary Mesisco of New York, and a brother, Gene Scialdone of Arizona.

Mr. Scialdone chose to be cremated. His family will be receiving friends from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the home of Rose Scialdone, 7411 Rebel Road. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kempsville Dialysis Center, Suite 140, Koger Center, Norfolk, Va. 23502. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, are handling arrangements.
