FOCUS: ALCOHOL AND THE BRAIN

Peering into the brain with sophisticated scanning devices, researchers are finding new answers to an old question: Why do some people crave alcohol, cocaine and a handful of other addictive substances to the point of self-destruction?

With the help of imaging devices that watch the brain at work, scientists have uncovered how addictive agents alter the brain's chemistry and have begun testing ways to block these changes and possibly alleviate some addictions.
