A Chesapeake man has been charged with driving under the influence in connection with a traffic accident that resulted in the death of a 75-year-old Portsmouth woman Tuesday night.
Police charged Lynn Albert Jones, 41, of the 300 block of Knells Ridge Drive, with driving under the influence and driving with a suspended license. Other charges may be pending in the case, said police spokeswoman Amber Whittaker.
The accident occurred about 11:30 p.m. in the 4100 block of Greenwood Drive in Cavalier Manor.
Police determined that Jones was driving the wrong direction in the southbound lane of Greenwood Drive when his van and a car collided, according to Whittaker. The four-lane road is divided by a median and wrong way signs are posted, she said.
Police ``received reports'' that the van appeared to be traveling at a high rate of speed when the collision occurred, said Whittaker.
Lucy Steele of the 1900 block of Richmond Avenue was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her husband, the Rev. Roger Steele, 76, was listed in stable condition Wednesday at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Their daughter, Joyce A. Cross, 52, of the same address, was listed in serious condition.
Steele is pastor of Mount Tabor Baptist Church in Franklin. Friends said they were coming back from a revival there Tuesday night.
Jones was listed in stable condition at Sentara Norfolk General. KEYWORDS: ACCIDENTS TRAFFIC FATALITY INJURIES
