John Caleb Garris Sr., 79, of the 5500 block of Town Point Road, died Aug. 26, 1997, in Sentara Nursing Center, Portsmouth.
He was born in Philadelphia and was the widower of Roberta G. Garris. He retired as a painter from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard with 20 years of service. Mr. Garris was a member of the Church of God, Saints of Christ (Belleville), Suffolk; he was the chief singer in the choir.
Survivors include a son, John Caleb Garris II of Cumberland, Md.; a sister, Emma Chase of Newark, N.J.; two grandsons; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Sunday in the Church of God, Saints of Christ Tabernacle, Belleville, Suffolk, by Evangelist C.C. Farrar. Burial will be in Belleville Cemetery, Suffolk. The body will be taken to the tabernacle at 9 a.m. Sunday. Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, is handling arrangements. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
