on Bank Street is shown in an photograph taken around 1902 by an
unknown photographer. Built between 1840 and 1841, the first classes
were held there in the latter year with John R. Scott, a
fiery-tempered Irishman as its headmaster. Legend says that when the
weather was hot and humid and the boys were unruly, Scott would
swoop down on the culprits and toss them out of the nearest window.
The old building, now the headquarters of the Hampton Roads Chamber
of Commerce, continued to accommodate the academy until 1915. It is
now regarded as the finest example of Greek Revival architecture in
Norfolk.
