PARENTS ENCOURAGED TO USE PROPER DROPOFF: Officials at Elizabeth City Middle School and River Road Middle School are asking parents to refrain from dropping off their children at Sheep-Harney Elementary School.

In order to avoid a possible safety hazard, parents with students enrolled at either of the middle schools should use the dropoff point in front of the Elizabeth City Middle School gym on Elizabeth Street.

LAST WEEK OF EXHIBIT: The Museum of the Albemarle's exhibit, ``Fire and Wind: Disasters of the Albemarle,'' will close Sept. 7. Major storms and disasters in the Albemarle region during the past century are chronicled.

The museum is seeking photographs of women from Northeastern North Carolina for display in its upcoming exhibit North Carolina Women Making History. Photographs depicting women at work, in the home, at social functions or religious ceremonies are sought.

MORRISON AWARD GIVEN: Joseph M. Bryan Jr. of Greensboro was awarded the 1997 Morrison Award during the recent celebration of Virginia Dare's 410th birthday.

The award is presented annually for significant achievement in the performing arts.

Bryan made this possible through his leadership and generosity to research and authentically construct much of the new scenery used in several acts of The Lost Colony.

RALEIGH

LOCAL MAN REAPPOINTED TO BRIDGE AUTHORITY: Speaker of the House Harold Brubaker has reappointed Dare County resident Danny Gray to the North Carolina Bridge Authority.

``North Carolina will prosper from the expertise that Mr. Gray brings to this authority,'' said Brubaker. ``The construction of new bridges in the northeastern part of North Carolina is critical to the continued expansion of tourism.

``It is important to have someone with his experience and background to oversee these projects.''
