City votes to rename
Broad Street Bridge
for James Causey Jr.
A long-awaited, rebuilt railroad overpass in a downtown residential area will have a new name when it opens.
The City Council voted Wednesday to rename the Broad Street Bridge the James C. Causey Jr. Memorial Bridge.
Causey, a former city engineer, headed the city government of Suffolk for more than 30 years. He was named acting city manager in May 1941 when the former manager became ill, then served as manager from June 18, 1942, to Sept. 30, 1971.
The original Broad Street Bridge, built in 1924 as a wooden overpass for horse-and-buggy traffic, was demolished in April 1996. The new concrete and steel span is expected to open in September.
The bridge links West Washington Street and Constance Road.
Deadline for tax adjustment
based on mileage due soon
The deadline to apply for a mileage-adjusted 1996 city personal property tax assessment on automobiles is Sept. 15.
To determine if you are eligible for an adjustment, take proof of mileage to the commissioner of revenue's office at City Hall between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.
About 4,000 residents have sought adjustments this year, the first time Suffolk has offered tax adjustments based on mileage, said Commissioner of Revenue Thomas Hazelwood. The average credit has been about $30, he said.
For proof of mileage, drivers need to show an inspection receipt or a service slip from an auto repair shop.
Adjustments are based on a formula tied to model year, make, and mileage. Late-model automobiles with high mileage are most likely to see reductions in their tax assessments.
