A major retrospective of the work of a renowned American artist, tracing the development of his imagery over five decades. This is the final stop of a national tour for the show, organized by the Houston Museum of Fine Arts and the Hampton museum.

In the Circle: The Art of James Biggers

Wise Gallery, Norfolk State University, Sept. 19-Dec. 12

Like his uncle John Biggers, James Biggers of Gastonia, N.C., has devoted his life to art. The nephew's recent work pays stylistic homage to his uncle.

The Door of Good and Evil: Jean Peacock and Matthew Bernier

The Arts Center of the Portsmouth Museums, Oct. 9-Dec. 14

Peacock, a Virginia Beach painter, and Bernier, a Norfolk art therapist who creates marionettes, have collaborated on a unique show. The exhibit, based on a fairy tale with moral themes, is part performance, part visual arts.

Toulouse-Lautrec: The Baldwin M. Baldwin Collection

The Chrysler Museum of Art, Oct. 23-Dec. 31

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was one French Impressionist who preferred to stay indoors. This show includes 98 of his lithographic posters and prints of dimly-lit cabaret scenes and other colorful subjects, plus a few paintings and drawings.

Furniture of the American South

The DeWitt Wallace Gallery, Nov. 8, 1997-Dec. 31, 1998

The first major exhibit of Southern furniture in more than 40 years will feature 120 of Colonial Williamsburg's finest early pieces. The show covers three Southern regions - the Chesapeake, Low Country and Back Country.
